The Seminar on "Major Educational and Economic Issues in the Process of Chinese-Style Modernization" Was Successfully Held

On January 6-7, 2024, the seminar "Major Educational and Economic Issues in the Process of Chinese-style Modernization - Responsibility of Scholars and Journals" co-sponsored by Editorial Department of Educational Economic Review of Beijing Normal University, Institute of Educational Economics of the Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University, and Capital Educational Economic Research Base of Beijing Normal University was successfully held in Zhuhai Campus of Beijing Normal University.More than 30 experts, scholars, journal editors and graduate students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, University of International Business and Economics, Central China Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, Qingdao University, Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences, Beijing Normal University and other universities participated in the seminar, focusing on major educational and economic issues in the process of Chinese modernization. In-depth exchanges and discussions were carried out.


The first session of the seminar was presided over by Professor Sun Zhijun, Secretary of the Party Committee of BNUBS and editor-in-chief of Educational Economic Review. He introduced the background of this seminar, and said that in order for academic research to form Chinese characteristics, Chinese style and Chinese manner, it is necessary to first identify important Chinese topics.

Professor Du Yuhong, chairman of the Education Economics Branch of the Chinese Society of Education and director of the Institute of Education Economics of Beijing Normal University, expressed warm welcome and sincere thanks to the participating experts on behalf of the organizers in his speech. He said that there is a symbiotic relationship between scholars and journals, and he expected the participating experts to present their profound insights on major educational issues and economic issues in the context of Chinese-style modernization.

Professor Chen Xiaoyu from the School of Education of Peking University summarized the changes and non-changes in the research of education economy based on the background of The Times, and shared his new understanding on important issues and research methods such as educational input and output, cost efficiency, educational supply and demand, education and labor market in the process of Chinese modernization. Professor Liu Haimin, former vice president of Northeast Normal University and Department of Education, pointed out that editors and scholars are a community of academic research. Based on his rich experience in journal editing and academic research and centering on social responsibility, he proposed that research in the field of education should pay attention to national discourse, face realistic problems, uphold a correct stance, and write original results. Professor Ye Fugui, editor-in-chief of Education Research of Tsinghua University, pointed out that in the process of Chinese-style modernization, education economics needs to pay attention to the sources of education funds and the rights and responsibilities of the contributors, and also pay attention to the modernization of educational content and other research issues, basing on experiences of how to maintain the current education system and what kind of education should be run.Professor Yao Jijun, School of Education Science, Nanjing Normal University, shared the results of the International Student Development assessment and the case study of large-scale education quality monitoring and education intervention conducted by him and his research team in primary and secondary schools in Jiangsu Province. It is pointed out that in the future, we need to study what kind of education can help the educatees live an ideal life, balance the educational reality and ideal orientation for the educational subjects, provide qualified talents for the national development, and provide basic support for the country to achieve a breakthrough from 0 to 1.Professor Sun Baicai, Dean of Normal College of Qingdao University and Associate Editor of Shandong Higher Education, pointed out from his two capacities as a scholar and journal editor that the research of education economics needs to determine a good research question, and expressed his views on specific issues such as future education model, social security and education internal paper, general employment distribution, small class size teaching, school system and management of private schools.Based on her personal understanding of Chinese-style modernization, Professor Hu Yongmei of the Institute of Educational Economics of the Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University, pointed out that scholars and periodicals need to pay attention to the major issues facing the development of education, economy and science and technology, so as to push the society and even the government to pay attention to these issues. The latest findings of the research team on the allocation of educational resources, educational financial input, and the relationship between education and labor market were introduced.

The second session of the seminar was moderated by Professor Hu Yongmei, Institute of Educational Economics, Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University.

Li Tao, Associate chief editor of the Journal of Education of Beijing Normal University, suggested that the authors organize and submit their articles in the form of special topics, so that the journals can set up columns and publish them. He then expounded the development difficulties facing the current journals from the aspects of journal evaluation and initial intention, journal development and staff recruitment.Ye Qingna, Associate editor of Education and Economy of Central China Normal University, basing the topic "Research on Education Economics: Practical Difficulties and Solutions ", pointed out that the research of educational economics is facing many problems: the topics are becoming more and more common, the methods are becoming more and more popular, and the data is becoming more and more public. At the same time, she believed that in the future, it is necessary to pay attention to in-depth cultivation and expansion of the territory, the standardization of methods and profound ideas, the use of data and the reconstruction of value.Professor Cai Zongmo, Associate editor of Chongqing Higher Education Research of Chongqing University of Arts and Sciences, took Chinese modernization as the theme, first analyzed the concepts of Chinese modernization, and revealed the natural meaning of Chinese modernization. Then he used word frequency analysis and word cloud analysis methods to reveal the major problems in the draft of many academic journals. Professor Du Ping, deputy director of the Institute of Educational Economics of the Department of Education, Beijing Normal University, pointed out that the study of educational economy in the process of Chinese-style modernization is actually to seek different solutions to the same key issues in the new stage of social development, and to put forward personal views on the allocation of educational resources, teacher supply, teacher training standards, digitalization and cost and benefit of educational resources in the context of population change.Liu Zeyun, a professor at the BNUBS and associate editor of Educational Economic Review, first reviewed the working history and initial achievements of Educational Economic Review since its founding 8 years ago, then stressed the importance of a rigorous theoretical system in the study of educational economics, and pointed out that the future study of educational economics needs to strengthen theoretical analysis. Professor Su Lifeng of the Research Center for Education and Open Economy of the University of International Business and Economics introduced his and his research team's research on the relationship between higher education and the NIT rate, focusing on the problem of how to optimize the structure of labor force in higher education, and proposed to optimize the layout of university majors and personnel training methods from the perspective of matching talent supply and demand.Professor Zong Xiaohua, deputy director of the Institute of Educational Economics and Management of Nanjing University, introduced to the experts the research results of his and his research team on the allocation of higher education resources and the training structure of higher education in recent years under the background of demographic structure transformation, the rise of scientific and technological revolution and global economic integration.

The participating experts agreed that this seminar focused on major education and economic issues in the process of Chinese-style modernization, and through in-depth academic discussion and adequate dialogue and exchange, it is of great significance to identify major education and economic issues in the new era, actively practice the social responsibility of scholars and periodicals, and also provide intellectual support for accelerating the construction of education power and promoting Chinese-style modernization.
